Headquartered in McLean, VA, By Light supports defense, civilian, and commercial IT customers worldwide.

Position Overview

By Light Professional IT Services is seeking a Test Engineer to support the Persistent Cyber Training Environment (PCTE) and RangeOS software integration and validation efforts in Orlando, FL.

The selected candidate will join a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for grey-space testing of software and networked cyber range systems—ensuring readiness, interoperability, and performance of DoD cyber training capabilities prior to field release.

This role focuses on hands-on software and systems testing in a classified and isolated environment, validating functional performance, interoperability, and integration across the PCTE ecosystem. You’ll work closely with developers, DevSecOps engineers, and mission users to deliver reliable, high-performance training environments for the U.S. Cyber Command and DoD components.

Responsibilities

  • Execute functional, integration, regression, and performance testing of PCTE and RangeOS software.
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts for CI/CD pipelines and continuous integration environments.
  • Validate software builds, environment deployments, and range configurations prior to release to systems integrator.
  • Conduct end-to-end testing of cloud-based microservices, user interfaces, and backend APIs supporting cyber range training events.
  • Perform verification and validation (V&V) activities aligned with Agile and DevSecOps lifecycle practices.
  • Support test readiness reviews (TRRs), defect triage meetings, and capability assessments.
  • Generate and maintain detailed test documentation, including test cases, procedures, reports, and traceability matrices.
  • Collaborate with system engineers, developers, and cyber operators to reproduce, isolate, and resolve issues in simulated mission scenarios.
  • Apply systems-level thinking to evaluate training platform performance, usability, and security.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies as a contributing member of the engineering team.

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • IAT Level II certification in accordance with DoDD 8570.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in software or systems testing, including functional, performance, and integration testing.
  • Familiarity with grey-space or isolated testing environments (classified, controlled, or emulated networks).
  • Experience with Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of Linux-based systems, network configuration, and virtualization (VMware, KVM, Docker).
  • Experience validating cloud-based or microservices-based architectures.
  • Working knowledge of Agile and DevSecOps methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret software requirements and translate them into testable acceptance criteria.
  • Proficiency in scripting or automation (Python, Bash, or similar).

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Experience supporting PCTE, RangeOS, or other DoD cyber range programs.
  • Background in Cybersecurity, Modeling & Simulation, or Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) environments.
  • Experience with automated test frameworks, REST API testing tools (e.g., Postman, Robot Framework, pytest).
  • Familiarity with container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, OpenShift).
  • Experience integrating test results into CI/CD dashboards and automated reporting.
  • CompTIA Security+, CEH, or other relevant certifications.
  • Familiarity with DoD software accreditation, RMF, and secure deployment practices.

Special Requirements/Security Clearance

  • Active Secret clearance required; TS/SCI strongly preferred.
