The Materials Engineer will support the research and development of a novel medical device (Junctional Tourniquet) for the control of traumatic hemorrhage. The device will deal with difficult to treat extremity and junctional (groin, shoulder) bleeds that regular tourniquets cannot reach. Effort includes development and structural optimization of a stand-alone and/or integrated prototype and operational assessment of form, fit, and interaction with existing equipment.

  • Evaluate materials and develop machinery and processes to manufacture materials for development of a medical device for the control of traumatic hemorrhage.
  • Makes material recommendations that meet specialized design and performance specifications.
  • Provide engineering solutions for new design and retrofit requirements and report on finding, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Assist in the design and development of prototype and manufacturing equivalent units.

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, science, or related discipline, or at least 8 years related work experience.
  • Experience as a materials engineer, capable of performing in-depth studies on materials with relation to the operational environment for planned use.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with test planning and testing techniques and capable of designing tests of materials reflecting environmental conditions expected.
  • Must possess the knowledge to conduct engineering investigations and analyze material attributes for use in an operational environment.
  • Must be able to use the latest in technology to determine cause of failure or fatigue and draw conclusions on mode of failure.
  • Must be familiar with composite material technology and be able to define suitable lightweight materials as alternatives.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or assigned to the DoD and/or U.S. Military Service.  
  • Have communication skills to effectively interface with military officials, managers, and subordinates.
  • Experience with manufacturing of medical devices.
