By Light Professional IT Services is seeking a Cloud Engineer to join our team. The selected candidate will become a member of the team dedicated to the migration and administration of existing virtual and physical server environments to a hosted cloud environment. The target applications and systems are a part of a large-scale enterprise-level environment that forms the core of several Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) critical applications and support systems. The Cloud Engineer will design and implement virtualized enterprise infrastructure and services. This position will have a broad range of responsibilities that require deep knowledge across the domains of enterprise architecture and cloud technologies. This position requires hands-on development and implementation within a fast-moving, agile group.

  • Build and integrate systems in public and private cloud computing environments
  • Perform hardware integration duties including rack installation, assembly, cabling, checkout, configuration, and test
  • Implement networking solutions to include configuration of network switches, routers, and firewalls
  • Secure systems servers and network components
  • Work with leads in other sub-systems, customers, and process owners to ensure solution integration
  • Produce and maintain documentation of the server sub-systems and support systems in the data center environment, including as-built documentation, capacity/performance plans, as well as all other areas of server system life-cycle planning
  • Provide input to developmental and operational metrics reports
  • Explore new technologies related to the cloud computer hardware and support systems and make recommendations for their introduction into the data center environment
  • Troubleshoot and manage problem resolution, including root cause analysis
  • Provide Architectural and Engineering designs for Cloud based infrastructure on Public IaaS
  • Deploy, test and document Development, Pre-Production and Production environments
  • Train and mentor Junior Administrators and Engineers
  • Use Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure features to provision, monitor, scale and distribute compute infrastructure
  • Create Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Microsoft Azure resources such as subnets, network access control lists, and security groups
  • Use Amazon CloudWatch metrics to monitor the health and utilization of AWS resources
  • Leverage resource tagging to allocate costs and optimize resource planning
  • Create gold images and employ auto scaling
  • Migrate complete systems and applications from existing virtual and physical environments to AWS/Azure cloud environments
  • Create migration plans, simulate migrations and test systems and applications post migration

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, computer science or appropriate discipline and 8+ Years of related technical experience in hardware/software development and implementation. 
  • Fundamental software engineering life-cycle experience
  • Knowledge and experience working with big data IT systems, and in-depth specialized knowledge of specific IT systems engineering processes and practices
  • Knowledge and experience with cloud data center management and server configurations and operation
  • Knowledge of UNIX and Linux
  • Knowledge of cloud computing architectures, systems, processes, development methodologies and technologies
  • Familiarity with Cloud administration
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively at all levels of staff and management
  • Flexibility and personality skills to work within a dynamic, high-visibility, multi-contractor environment, working with government and contractor
  • Current experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, EBS, VPC, RDS, ELB, etc.) and Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with configuration management software Puppet/Chef/SaltStack as well as SAN/NAS/Storage solutions
  • Exposure to high-traffic medium to large scale environment a plus
  • Expert knowledge in troubleshooting complex network and application environments
  • Systems administration-level knowledge of HTTP/Apache/Nginx, DNS/BIND, SSH, SNMP, NFS, Perl and/or Shell, Python, Nagios, XenServer
  • Advanced experience with performance tuning, package installation, patch management updates, network and server management issues
  • Experience in operational automation of repeatable tasks and a solid understanding of scaling automation solutions
  • Knowledge of server and storage technologies 
  • Knowledge of data center planning and modeling 
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies 
  • Knowledge of Cloud Computing service market, models, offering types, and architecture concepts 
  • Experience with assessing tools and processes and developing strategic plans and roadmaps for IT Strategies and Roadmaps 
  • Knowledge of Federal security best practices and FedRAMP/A&A process 
  • Detailed knowledge of networking concepts

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs a plus
  • Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure Cloud Certification preferred
  • Experience with DevOps concepts and frameworks a plus

Special Requirements/Security Clearance

  • Candidate must meet eligibility requirements for obtaining TS or High BI security clearance
