Overview

Phacil, a By Light company, is seeking a Technical Writer/Editor to join our team supporting a Government customer. 

Responsibilities

  • Determine the needs of end users of technical documentation
  • Study product samples and talk with product designers and developers
  • Work with technical staff to make products easier to use and thus need fewer instructions
  • Organize and write supporting documents for products
  • Use photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation, and charts that increase users’ understanding
  • Coordinate Peer reviews and other assessment meetings as required
  • Select appropriate medium for message or audience, such as manuals or online videos
  • Standardize content across platforms and media and perform QA on all government deliverables
  • Gather usability feedback from customers, designers, and manufacturers
  • Be flexible and innovative as requirements change to meet directives and mission requirements
  • Revise documents as new issues arise
  • Create operating instructions, how-to manuals, assembly instructions, and “frequently asked questions” pages to help technical support staff, government customers, application and process owners

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience as a technical writer or similar level of experience in educational program
  • Knowledge and extensive use of Microsoft products, ability to interface with government customers for requirements gathering and presentation of findings, ability to track versions, attention to detail and possess a knowledgeable informational technology background.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written communication

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Extensive use of Microsoft Products
  • Knowledge of information technology and program support
  • Experience with a technical subject, such as computer science, Web design, or engineering, is important.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with security documentation requirements (e.g. Risk Management Framework, ISO and NIST applicable documentation understanding)
  • Communication skills - must be able to take complex, technical information and translate it for clear understanding for those who have nontechnical backgrounds.
  • Detail oriented - create detailed instructions for others to follow so that the instructions can be useful.
  • Imagination - must be able to think about or envision a procedure or product in the way that a person without technical experience would think about it.
  • Teamwork - must be able to work well with others, always part of a team: with other writers; with designers, editors, and illustrators; and with the technical people whose information they are explaining.
  • Technical skills - must be able to understand and then explain highly technical information.
  • Writing skills - must have excellent writing skills to be able to explain technical information clearly.
