Network Infrastructure Technician, Associate employees are typically assigned to teams of two or more experienced field technicians who guide and direct their activities in the performance of installation, testing, and issue resolution on telecommunications equipment components.  The position is designed to be a learning opportunity and to increase and enhance Apprentice knowledge and understanding of network operations.  Supervision is generally required on the job, but Apprentice personnel will be given increasing degrees of latitude to accomplish tasks on small to mid-sized network installation efforts as they learn to perform each technical aspect successfully.


Apprentice Network Installation Technicians can expect to be placed on project assignments where any combination of the following tasking could be expected:


Infrastructure installation and de-installation

  • Racks
  • Ironwork (ladder rack, subfloor infrastructure)

Cable management

  • Fiber & copper management systems (i.e. Panduit raceway, Fiber Management Systems (FMS))
  • DC Power cable (determining path, wax cord lacing)

Cable Terminations, cleaning and testing

  • RJ45
  • Coaxial/BNC
  • Wire wrap
  • Fiber Optic Cable (light levels, scoping)     


  • HTAP
  • Equipment   

Documentation Responsibilities

  • Use of Microsoft Office suite of products for: 
  • Requirements review and comprehension
  • Redlining
  • Reporting
  • Daily Status Report (DSR) submission
  • Site Completion Report (SCR) submission

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • Must be able to travel 85% of the time on deployments for both CONUS and OCONUS locations.
  • Must possess the knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include a basic understanding of modern telecommunications components, computers, interconnections and overall layout of common installations.
  • Some minimal theoretical knowledge of basic network devices (i.e. servers, routers, switches, etc.) obtained from internships, self-study, or course work are needed to ensure comprehension and development of necessary skills to install these devices per DISN Implementation Standards.
  • Apprentice Network Installation Technician employees should possess the ability to assimilate and learn the technology quickly and consistently hone their skill sets in order to accomplish routine technical task assignments under supervision.
  • General business communications skills including verbal, written, and graphic should be well developed, as should exposure to a customer service environment where discretion and professional demeanor are commonplace

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Government network systems experience
  • Cable running, splicing, and connector exposure
  • Possession of a basic telecommunications installation tool kit 

Special Requirements/Security Clearance

  • Must have the ability to obtain a Secret level Security clearance
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 85% with other team members to meet installation assignment requirements

Physical Demands

  • Ability to set up and ascend/descend ladders as necessary to reach overhead cabling and components undergoing installation or deinstallation
  • Ability to get down under sub-flooring as required to reach components and cabling
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
