By Light is looking for a highly skilled, seasoned cyber range manager. The Cyber Range SME will manage the Joint Base San Antonio DoD Persistent Cyber Training Environment (PCTE) node. Primary duty will be the maintenance, integration, system management and configuration, operation, and verification of Cyber Training Ranges. Will maintain and update simulator designs, integrate hardware and software, determine baseline configurations. Additionally, the SME will configure and test existing/legacy images of virtualized enclaves for integration into the system. 


The Cyber Range SME will design scenarios, injecting threat activity, logging operator actions, implementing infrastructure, cyber security, and infrastructure training, troubleshooting systems, networks, and range supporting architectures related to cyber security offensive and defensive operations training on the largest and most sophisticated DoD distributed cyber security training platform in the world.  As a lead and a subject matter expert, they will provide deep levels of experience and guidance to operators and content developers on proper ways to design, build, execute and maintain cyber security training ranges to support the extremely high demand, cutting edge scenario exposure required for each operator to acquire and maintain the rigorous currency and continuation training requirements demanded of them.

Required Experience/Qualifications


  • Skilled in VMWare vCenter & ESXi and NSX
  • Skilled in NSX and VXLAN within VMWare environments
  • Skilled in DevSecOps & containerization technology such as OpenShift or Kubernetes
  • Skilled in configuration automation including technology such as Ansible or Puppet
  • Experience managing Dell Blade Servers, Hard Drives, Power Supplies
  • Experience managing NetApp Storage
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level 2 Certification highly desired
  • Security+, CCNA Cyber Ops, CCNA Security, etc


  • Experience with managing Cyber Ranges and Training Environments
  • Systems/Services: DNS, Active Directory, Exchange 2010-2016, IIS, SQL Server, SANs
    Operating Systems: MS Server 2003-2016; Windows XP/Vista/7/10; Debian/Red Hat Linux
    Virtualization: KVM, VM Ware
  • Networking: Basic knowledge of Proxies, Routing, Switching, VLANs, Firewalls


  • Engineer capable of configuring operating systems and networking appliances
  •  Understanding of application protocols (ping, dns, ssh, smtp, ntp, https, etc)
  • Ability to quickly diagnose application issues in a virtual or physical environment
  • Willing to travel to customer locations
  • Ability to train customers how to use the simulator
  • Documentation
  • Process – Generates comprehensible documentation for reference by other engineers, developers, etc. that complies with company standards.
  • External – Produces design documentation and build guides for entities outside the company (customers) that are professional.
