Overview

By Light is seeking an Installation Technician that can support installation, integration and testing of network hardware and cable plant consisting of low voltage cable systems such as Cat3/5/6/6 as well as fiber optical cable plant.   This Technician must be able to support all aspects including the  survey, design, engineering, implementation and integration of Local Area Networks (LAN), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and a variety of other tactical and fixed communications and information systems at for the department of Defense (DOD) and other Federal agencies throughout the country.  

 

Candidate may work alone or as part of a team providing field engineering and installation support for voice, data, fiber optic cable and a variety of other communications and information systems. This will include assessing current systems, determining future needs, and installing approved designs

 

Candidate must be able to identify all subtasks required to accomplish their assigned project, determine tools and material requires, prioritize work and develop a work plan that enables completion of assigned task within the allotted time.  

 

Candidate must have strong problem-solving, as well as the ability to interact well with both internal and external engineers, technicians, and customers.

 

These positions will frequent travel (up to 75%).  When not on site, Technicians will be assisting in the development of project plans, designs and documentation for future sites as well as providing technical reach back to deployed installation teams.

Responsibilities

Work as part of an installation team responsible for the installation of voice, data, fiber optic cable and a variety of other related network equipment installation and troubleshooting support. Responsible for reading, interpreting and providing redlines related engineering drawings and design packages. Rack and stack network equipment including Cat5/CAT6 and fiber cable management equipment. Review, implement and provide input to installation design plans for cable and network equipment installation related tasks. Conduct site surveys in support of engineering/project management requirements for design, installation, integration, de-installation and troubleshooting. Other duties include 'Rack & Stacking' equipment, preparing and inventorying BOMs and redlining documentation. 

Required Experience/Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience with the installation, termination and testing of low voltage copper cable systems.
  • 3+ years experience with the installation of cable pathway systems (cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks or D-rings), patch panels and wire management components.
  • 3+ years experience with the installation of Telecommunications communications equipment.
  • Experience with the installation of EMT and other non Flexible conduit systems.
  • Experience with the firestopping of various types of cable penetrations.
  • Proficiency with basic installation tools including RJ-11, RJ-45, pin crimpers, wire strippers, pin extractors, floor tile puller and 66/110 punch down tools.
  • Must own your own basic telecom tools including: Punch down tool with a 66/110 blade, snips, wire strippers, basic hand tools; Personal Protective Equipment including: Safety Boots, Safety Glasses, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and BICSI Standards.
  • Must have working knowledge of cable color codes and able to terminate 568A & 568B.
  • Must be OSHA10 certified or the have the ability to complete this course within one month of employment.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends when required to accommodate customer requests.
  • Must be able to provide daily status/updates to supervisors/ managers.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Must have a valid driver license and good driving record

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • Telecom Certifications including: BISCI, RCDD, Panduit, Leviton, etc.
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • Proficiency at building cable connectors for the following standards RS-422A, RS-23A, RS-449, RS-530, 568A and 568B.
  • Able to operate and troubleshoot using the following test equipment: DSP2000, DTX1800, OTDR, FOM, and VOM.
  • Possess working knowledge of ANSI/TIA/EIA cabling standards and the National Electric Code. 
  • Experienced Electrical / HVAC Contractor.

Special Requirements/Security Clearance

Must possess a DOD Secret security clearance or have the ability to obtain one and/or pass an equivalent criminal/employment/education background check.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to be stand, walk and climb ladders for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs
  • Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl as required to install hardware and cabling. to include working below computer floors, above cieling grid and inside of modular furniture and cubicles as required.
  • Must be able to climb ladder and work overhead from a ladder, scaffolding or lift equipment
